Fun with Fishnets

Fishnets

Friday night I ended up heading up to the Conservatory to see a few bands play as well as the Kabaret Falschantz burlesque dancers. Dancers are subject I'd like to get into photographing more often so I brought my camera along and got a few shots. The light in the Conservatory is not great by any means. But, I did the best I could with the 50/1.4. I just can't bring myself to use a flash in a situation like this. Maybe, in the future I'll give it more of a try. I've seen it done successfully for some club/live performance shots that I think are good. But, there is just something for me about a flash adding synthetic emotions. I know when done right it can still maintain that feeling and enhance the dynamic range of tones for low light like this. But, I was able to get enough light to get some shots with the 50 and no flash. Luckily they left the light on for the dancers performance unlike the light for most of the live bands which is pretty much demands flash for anything decent. The other thing is flash during a show is just annoying to me, I don't like it when other people take a lot of flash shots during a show so I try not to do it myself. But, it just depends on the venue, sometimes its fine other times excessive flashes going off are bothersome. The other thing, the 50 1.4 has a very small profile and is easy to strap onto my back and forget about it which is a big plus for me so I don't have to worry much about lugging it around for times when I'm not taking photos but I want to have it at hand.

Fishnets with Chuck Taylor

When I ended up going through these images I liked several of the ones with just the lower portion of the bodies, feet or torso. There is just something about the ability and control to crop someone's head out in a photo that I like. Also, for their style of dance I think it makes sense to me. It portrays the situation it in more of an impersonal nature. Lynna or "The Frau" as she's known in her dance troupe is very nice and I hope to have a chance to take shots of them sometime again. I think its cool that people are doing something like this in Oklahoma and I hope they can continue doing it. As always, when their performance was over, everyone was left with a smile on their face.
